Cause of the fire was unknown. The mine is in the upper peninsula's famed copper country of Keweenaw peninsula. Because of the age of the 100 foot high frame building, it was not long before it was an inferno. It had stood atop a 500 foot hill overlooking Portage lake since the turn of the century. Nine fire departments from neighboring communities helped the Quincy fire depart- ment fight some 100 grass fires which were started by flying embers. Intense heat kept firemen at least 300 feet away from the building. Sparks also set fire to two houses and a barn. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
