The fire originated from a piece of candle carelessly thrown away by some of the men who came up shortly before that hour and which lodged behind the plank lining of the shaft where the fire could not be readily reached after it was discovered. The shaft was at once sealed up and has not yet been opened, though smoke had almost ceased to issue from the shaft when the writer visited the mine on Thurs- day. On account of no one being able to enter the shaft up to the present time the extent of the damage is not known. The fire started between the fifth and sixth levels. Capt. ROSCORLA informed us that the fire had not burned below the twelfth level but how far above the point where the fire started the shaft is damaged is not known. The shaft will be opened to- day and as soon as the gases have escaped so that men can enter it the extent of the damage will be known. About 75 men are thrown out of work for the present, though it is believed that nearly all these will be put to work again next week. No. 2 is the same shaft where the big cave occurred two years ago. ===========================================================================
