Wreckage was found near Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan, in November, 1849. ------------------------------------------------------- Buffalo Daily Courier, May 20, 1848 The schooner Tribune is probably wrecked. She left Chicago previous to the gale, with a cargo of wheat. Her small boat has been washed ashore at Muskegon. The Tribune was new, and valued at $7,000, her cargo as much more. She was owned by Higginson, Foster & Co., of Chicago, and insured. --------------------------------------------------------- Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, November 12, 1849 A LOST SCHOONER FOUND We learn from the Milwaukee Sentinel, that the schooner Tribune, which was lost a year ago last April, and nothing known of her fate has been recently discovered sunk, near the North West Point of Great (sic) Traverse Bay in 70 or 80 feet of water. Her rigging haven broken loose, some of it floats at the surface of the water. There being no lighthouse in that vicinity, she struck on a dangerous reef of rocks there, all on board perishing. The Indians say that a child floated ashore which they buried. ---------------------------------------------------------- Buffalo Daily Republic, November 9, 1849 The Chicago Democrat announces the discovery of the schooner Tribune, which was lost a year ago last April near the North West pier of Grand Traverse Bay, in 70 or 80 feet of water. Some of her rigging haven broken loose, is floating upon the surface of the water.
