Griffin) Cleared Oswego with 600 ton of coal consigned to Schenck in Toledo. Struck by a storm when a few miles east of the Niagara river causing Capt. Griffin to turn and run back down the lake. Reportedly there were no problems and the pumps constantly tested dry. Suddenly the ST. PETER gave a sudden lurch to port and shipped a heavy sea; the next one taking her down within sight of shore and the Oswego life-savers who were on the way to her aid. The number of crewmen aboard, according to Capt. Griffin's own statements, varied from 3 to 5.
