Ryan, Buffalo, N.Y. MASTER: Capt. Michael Carr, Buffalo TONNAGE: 491.08 gt DIMENSIONS: 138 x 30 x 13 CASUALTIES: 1 The CHARLES C. RYAN was en route from Midland, Ontario, to Buffalo with her consorts JOURNEYMAN and COHEN in tow when the RYAN began leaking somewhere near the boiler. At first it was thought the leak could be controlled but the water began gaining on the pumps rapidly. After blowing signal for her consorts to let go the RYAN made for Alpena at top speed. Within a couple of hours the crew was forced to take to the yawl. The mate, Patrick Slattery, refused to leave the RYAN and was the lone fatality. After rowing and bailing all night the remainder of the crew were picked up by the schooner BRECK. *Propeller LAKE ONTARIO was built by Simpson at St. Catharines in 1874. One source says 1872. Wrecked in 1888.
