At that point she could have backed off but the capt. thought he could work her over the bar as soon as the sea increased a little. Mother Nature had other plans and set a gale upon her, swinging her broadside to the wind and leaving her at the mercy of the breakers. Crew from the life saving station at Muskallonge Lake rowed out in the gale and took off the crew. The next afternoon, as the gale was breaking up the PACIFIC, the life saving crew went out again to rescue the captain's dog which had been shut-up in the after-cabin and forgotten about.
