Bassett TONNAGE: 2,017 gt - 1,372 nt DIMENSIONS: 240 x 35 x 14.66 CASUALTIES: 1 of 42 (James Jacques, deckhand, of Point Edward) Was enroute from Port Arthur to Sarnia with with grain, flour, general cargo and 12 passengers when she struck the rocks bow on at Isle Royale. The night was black and a gale of wind and snow had overtaken the region. Newspaper reports blamed the disaster on blinding snow and also on a frozen compass. Whatever the cause it left 42 people stranded on a desolate rock for 3 days without food or shelter while temperatures dipped to -23°. They were finally rescued by the tug JAMES WHALEN, Capt. McMaster.
