HOLMES broke loose from her moorings due to flooding on the Black River and ended up with her nose buried in the opposite bank. It was nearly two weeks before she was released. In 1905 the HOLMES was upbound on Lake Superior and survived the great storm in which 29 other vessels were lost or damaged. The greatest loss was the MATAAFA at Duluth. The HOLMES was also thought to have been lost in the "Big Blow" of November, 1913. Again, she survived when other larger, newer vessels didn't. ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List - 1905, 1906 Buffalo Evening News, 6 February 1904 Duluth News Tribune, 8 October 2015
