John Whitney TONNAGE: 49.91 gt, 47.42 nt DIMENSIONS: 64 x 17 x 6 CASUALTIES: none July 12, 1901 - towed into Ludington, MI in a leaking condition with crew exhuasted by work at the pumps. Sept 12, 1902 - Missed the harbor entrance at St. Joseph in a strong NW wind and high sea. Stranded to the north- ward of the north pier where she went to pieces. The crew swam and waded to shore. On June 8, 1855, the EXPERIMENT went ashore at nearly the same place with a loss of 4 lives including 10 month old Walter Harding Napier, son of Capt. Nelson W. Napier who was not aboard. Mrs. Henrietta Napier and her 13 year old son, Edward, were found alive when a wrecking crew chopped a hole in the bottom of the capsized hull the following morning. At the time the EXPERIMENT was owned by Jas. E.
