With three feet of water in the hold and the pumps broken Captain Estelle desperately attempted to seek shelter at Manistee harbor. The crew, benumbed by the cold were unable to raise the centerboard and the schooner ran onto the bar just outside the piers. The raging seas smashed against the schooner again and again, driving it hard onto the beach with her starboard quarters exposed to the full fury of the storm and breaking her in two. The captain and cook had remained aft and were lost despite repeated attempts by the Life-saving service to rescue them. Also lost was seaman Albert Davis who had become entangled in the anchor gear and broken his leg.
