TONNAGE: 7031 gt DIMENSIONS: 525 x 56 x 27 CASUALTIES: 12 of 33 EMPEROR was bound from Port Arthur, Ont., loaded with ore for Ashtabula, OH., when it struck Canoe Rocks in a dense fog broke into two sections. The crew were able to get away in the lifeboats, but one of these was overturned when the freighter plunged below the water. The USCGC KIMBALL was in the area of Isle Royale to set up navigation lights and was returning to its base when it picked up the EMPEROR'S distress calls. The cutter arrived on the scene twenty-five minutes later and picked up 21 survivors. The lost included: Eldon Walkinshaw, capt. D. Moray, first mate W. Currie, second engineer J. Sepchuk, wheelsman, Montreal D. Perry, watchman H. Corbier, fireman F. Ladue, fireman K. Campbell, fireman J. Brizzie, coal passer M. Cochran, (female) second cook M.
