Griffin, of the steamer BERTSCHY, while on his way up Washington st. discovered a drunken man lying on the sidewalk, the night being extremely cold. Recognizing him as Johnny McQuale, the captain raised him up, and insisted on taking him home. McQuale became wrathy, put his hand into his hip pocket, drew forth a revolver and fired two shots, one of which entered the cap- tain's leg above the knee, making a flesh wound. The captain immediately released his hold of him saying that he was shot. a policeman who happened along about the time the shooting was done arrested Mc- Quale and took him to jail. The LAKE BREEZE entered our harbor with- out difficulty on her way to Manistee, Jan. 31. The propeller DEPERE, of Goodrich's line, will run between Milwaukee, Pent- water, Ludington and Manistee during the coming season of navigation, making tri-weekly trips. We hear it stated that the Engelmann Transportation Co. think strongly of purchasing the Canadian steamer CHICORA for their line between Milwaukee & Grand Haven. The chief obstacle in the way is the naturalization of the CHICORA, which can only be done by act of Congress. She is the fastest steamer on the lakes, capable of making, it is said, twenty miles an hour. She would prove a valuable addition to the Engelmann line. The Englemann Line - Capt. Saveland in- forms us that a boat of the Engelmann line will be along this shore every week during the winter. At the opening of navigation the line will run a boat from Grand Haven to Pent- water and return, daily, touching at Mus- kegon, Whitehall, Stony Creek and Little Point Sauble, now known as Silver Lake. Also from Milwaukee to Pentwater, Luding- ton, Manistee and Frankfort and return, daily. Every possible arrangement is being made to provide for the comfort and convenience of the traveling public. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pentwater News Friday, February 13, 1874 [extracts of marine news] No marine news in this issue. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pentwater News Friday, February 20, 1874 [extracts of marine news] That winter navigation is practicable on this shore is being thoroughly demon- strated this season. The LAKE BREEZE, from Milwaukee, arrived at Pentwater last Tuesday, Feb. 17, and cleared for Manistee the same day. The little MAGNET still continues her trips between Pent- water and Manistee with great regular- ity, considering the fact that navigation is supposed to be closed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pentwater News Friday, February 27, 1874 [extracts of marine news] The LAKE BREEZE was in as usual last Tuesday. ===========================================================================
