FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1873 VOLUME II, NUMBER 103. [Marine extracts} Contrary to general opinion, there were fewer disasters and less loss of life on the lakes during the year just closed than in 1871. Capt. Hall, marine reporter at Detroit, estimates the disasters at 863, in the neighborhood of 200 less than during any one of the four immediately preceding seasons. The greater portion of the mishaps occurred during the month of August. The whole number of vessels that went ashore was 209, of which 88 proved a total loss; 21 foundered, and 26 were burned or more or less damaged by fire. We notice that the MINNIE CORLETT is not included in the published list, which can be only approximatley correct. The number of deaths among sailors engaged in navigating the great lakes, in 1872, by the same authority is placed at 210, of which 10 resulted from natural causes, 189 from drowning, 11 from accidents of various kinds, in- cluding the shooting of one man by the captain of the vessel. The loss of life is 61 less than in 1871. The funeral service of Capt. Charles Craine, of the illfated SOUVENIR, will be preached at the Congregational Church on Sunday morning next, by Rev. L. Warren. Wm. H. Ewing, who owned one-half of the tug B. W. RICE during the last season, has now become sole proprietor. She will be ready for business as soon as navigation shall open in the spring. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PENTWATER NEWS PENTWATER, OCEANA CO., MICH. Mr. John Barr, living on the south Clay Banks, found a trunk on the beach sometime since, which Mr. Hardy thought belonged to Mr. Rich, of Pentwater, who was a passenger on the steamer LAC LA BELLE when she went down last fall. The trunk was accordingly sent for, and proves to be the one that was lost. Some of the articles are missing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PENTWATER NEWS PENTWATER, OCEANA CO., MICH.
