XIII, No. 5 WHOLE NO. 369 The tug BISMARCK came in this week with one of Tyson & Robinson's Barges. The MESSENGER came in this harbor on Saturday last with a heavy load of freight, which she unloaded at Kirkland's dock and immediately re- turned to Milwaukee. The Engelmann Transportation Co., have chartered the MESSENGER to the Michigan Central Railroad Company for the season, to run between Cheboy- gan and Pentwater. J. P. O'Brien, Esq., has fitted up the IDA, and will run her for the accomodation of the citizens of Manistee and vicinity the coming season. The time-table will appear soon. The schooner "PLANET", that was sunk at the mouth of the river, has been raised and towed up to the end of Canfield's boom where it is in- tended to careen her over and repair the damage. She has a hole in the side about twelve feet long. Ludington harbor is so situated as for form a receptacle for all the floating ice between Big Point Sauble and Little Point Sauble, and this winter has had its full share of that article, the ice being frequently frozen as far out as the eye could reach, and of course navigation closed; not so with our harbor. The rapid current in the Manistee River has kept it almost entirely free from ice or other obstructions. We understand that the METROPOLIS and CITY OF TOLEDO will commence their regular trips on this Shore in about a week. Both boats have been overhauled and thoroughly repaired. It is also reported that the Goodrich line will be extended along this Shore this season. This would give us three lines of steamers - an indi- cation of the growing importance of this section of country, Pentwater in particular. - (Pentwater News) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Manistee Times, Manistee, Michigan Thursday, April 18, 1872 VOL. XIII, No. 7 WHOLE NO. 371 The "WM. JONES" loaded with lumber at Canfield & Wheeler's mill on Saturday last. This is the first load of the season. The "MESSENGER" started for Milwaukee on Saturday evening, but when a few miles out her rudder became disabled and she was towed back, and Sun- day evening the tug WILLIAMS took her to Grand Haven to be repaired. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Manistee Times, Manistee, Michigan Thursday, April 25, 1872 VOL. XIII, No. 8 WHOLE NO. 372 The "WILLIAM JONES" was waterlogged opposite Evanston, Ill., on the 18th. She was loaded with lumber from Canfield & Wheeler's mill. The deck load was lost, and the crew was saved only by the greatest bravery of several mariners who manned the tug TARRANT, of Chicago, and went to the rescue at the peril of their own lives. OUR HARBOR - By referring to an article elsewhere in this paper will be seen a list of the appropriations to the East Shore Harbors. The amount for our harbor is $10,000. This amount thought not as large as it should have been will go a great way toward giving us the finest harbor on this shore. The Pier 14 miles north of Manistee heretofore called Turner's Pier will be known hereafter as Perry's Pier. A white light will be kept on this Pier from May 1st until November 1st, 1872. The MANISTEE will make tri-weekly trips between here and Milwaukee this season. The MANISTEE has just come in, bringing with her a lot of green vegetables. ===========================================================================
