SMITH Bad Axe, May 25 - JOSEPH R. SMITH, 68, former Drain Commissioner of Huron County, died Friday noon in his home in Gladwin, Mich. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. ALICE SMITH, whom he married Jan. 1, 1903 in Bad Axe; three daughters, Mrs. ELLA ENGEL, Roscommon, Mich., Mrs. BEATRICE McRAE, East Detroit, and Mrs. ANNA- BELLE PAGE, Gladwin, Mich.; two sons, GEORGE and BERT SMITH, both of Greenville, Mich.; 14 grand- children; a brother, FRANK SMITH, Pigeon, and a sister, Mrs. MARGARET KRUSE, Minneapolis, Minn. Funeral services will be held in Pigeon Metho- dist church at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Rev. Ellis E. Biggs, pastor of the Assembly of God church, Albion, will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery, Bad Axe. Mr. SMITH was Drain Commissioner for 16 years. He left office Dec. 31, 1926. After he left the Drain Commissioner office, he operated a restaurant in Pigeon several years. In 1930, he won the Republican nomination for Sheriff of Huron County in a field of seven candi- dates. In the general election, he had a three- vote margin over the late JOSEPH J. MURRAY, Demo- cratic nominee, but MURRAY won in a recount.
