Funeral services for SAM CHANDLER, blind, 83-year-old Negro - who burned to death about 2:15 a.m. Sunday in his one room home in the rear of 146 Central, will be held from the Patton funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. E. L. Todd, pastor of the Second Baptist church, in charge. Burial will be in a cemetery at Allegan. MR. CHANDLER'S wife, ALICE, 78, who was severely burned on her feet and hands, was reported at Leila hospital today to be in a satisfactory physical condition but suffering greatly from shock. MRS. CHANDLER told police she was awakened by the crack- ling of the flames and tried to arouse her husband, but was un- able to do so. MR. CHANDLER had been ill in bed for several weeks. She was burned on her bare feet and hands when she ran through the blazing doorway. She aroused her daughter, MRS. MARY DRAKE, who resides at 146 Central. The flames kept the daughter from entering the building. MR. CHANDLER was born in July, 1856, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of ISAAC and RENA (SMITH) CHANDLER. He lived in Allegan before coming to Battle Creek about 40 years ago. For a number of years, he was employed here as an odd-job man. Besides the widow, and the daughter here, he is survived by another daughter, MRS. CORDELIA LEE of Chicago. ===========================================================================
