ALEXANDER ELTON. A telegram to C. H. MOULTON, in this place, early Saturday evening, conveyed the sad news of the death of CAPT. ELTON, who breathed his last on that day at the residence of his brother- in-law, No. 396 Ogden av., Chicago, in the 57th year of his age. CAPTAIN ALEXANDER ELTON was born in Sunderland, county Durham, Eng., Aug. 3, 1831. He commenced to sail with his uncle when only 8 years old, and has ever since followed the water for a livelihood. He was master of several steamers that have run between this shore and Chicago, and ranked among the best of lake officials in every respect. He was always popular with the traveling public. He was married in October, 1863, to MISS CARRIE LOY, at Chicago, thence removed to St. Joseph where he continued to reside up to about six years ago, when matters necessitated MRS. ELTON'S presence with her mother at Lombard, Ill. Last season the Captain remodeled his old home here, fixing it up in pleasing shape with the intention of passing the balance of his days here, but an All-wise Providence ordered otherwise. Last fall, in company with his only son, WILLIAM, a young man favorably known to our people, he started for a winter's sojourn in Florida, where the son has property in- terests, but on reaching St. Louis the Captain was compelled, on Dec. 8, to return to Chicago on account of a carbuncle, which he soon suc- ceeded in ridding himself of, but it left his system in a debilitated state, from which he did not rally. He also had creeping paralysis. As spring drew near he looked forward hopefully, earnestly, to a time when his strength would permit him to return to St. Joseph - to die, if so ordered, in his old home and among his former neighbors - but the last call found him "still there" and he met the grim messenger in the same fearless manner that he had faced many a great storm. There was no time for the last farewell. The Captain was sitting in his chair when he passed quickly and without warning into eternal sleep. CAPTAIN ELTON was a member of Occidental Lodge, No. 56, F. & A. M.; Calvin Britain Chapter, No. 72, R. A. M., St. Joseph Council, No. 44, R. & S. M.; Burnett Lodge, No. 119 and St. Joseph Encampment, No. 37, I. O. O. F. He was Past Master of Occidental Lodge, and was made a Mason here twenty-seven years ago. As soon as his son returns from Florida, the Captain's remains, which have been enbalmed, will be brought to St. Joseph for interment under the auspices of the Odd Fellows and Masonic fraternity. Besides the immediate family the deceased leaves a host of friends who will sincerely miss the genial face and cordial greeting of a good brother and neighbor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Joseph Herald Saturday, April 14, 1888 The remains of the late CAPT. ALEX. ELTON were brought here on Tuesday noon's train for interment and funeral services held at the M. E. Church at 2 p.m. under the direction of the Masons and Odd Fellows. REV. M. D. CARREL officiated at the ser- vices. The widow of the deceased and son WILL, Mr. and Mrs. KEPNER and MRS. C. D. INGRAHAM, sisters to MRS. ELTON, accompanied the body from Chicago. The family desire to express their heartfelt thanks to all for the kind aid rendered them in their deep affliction. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
