The Niles Republican
Thursday, 18 November, 1869

         ROBERT CAMPBELL, a Scotchman of about seventy years,
       residing on the south part of Michigan Avenue, in West
       Niles, hung himself with a bed cord to the stair rail-
       ing of his residence, at about six o'clock in the even-
       ing of Saturday last. He was very soon discovered by
       his son WILLIAM, who was passing up the stairway on his
       way to his bed-room, and cut down. As he was laid down,
       he gasped once, and Dr. Reading was immediately called.
       Life was extinct, however, on his arrival. A jury was
       empanelled the same evening by Coroner Glenn, consist-
       ing of D. H. Freed, Foreman, Benj. Toney, B. K. Jones,
       Jos. W. Bailey, James B. Glenn, and Henry Kimmel, who
       after hearing the testimony of young CAMPBELL returned
       a verdict in accordance with the facts above stated.
       
         MR. CAMPBELL was an old citizen of this place, and
       a well educated man. He had wealthy relations in his
       native country, which he visited quite lately. It is
       believed that the fear of destitution, as a result of
       his unfortunate habits, led to his untimely end.
