                           BENTON HARBOR HOTEL
                            COLLAPSE IS A MYSTERY
                            
              Benton Harbor, Mich., Jan. 30. - Sixty thousand
            dollars worth of concrete steel and lumber this
            morning lay in one big heap at Sixth and East Main
            streets.
              Yesterday morning this same pile of concrete was
            the framework of an eight-story hotel. Starting
            the night before and continuing all day yesterday
            the seven stories just melted away. Early this
            morning the last section tumbled, completing the
            wreck. Workmen today began attacking the mountain
            of debris, preparatory to rebuilding.
              Collapse of the big structure is likely to re-
            main a mystery. The contractors point to other
            concrete structures over the country which have
            fallen in a similar fashion, and say that the
            causes of their collapse were difficult to deter-
            mine. The concrete may have become frozen before
            it set or the cement used may have been poor, 
            thus making it impossible for the concrete to
            set within the time usually allowed.
