BROWN, Vermonter, Aged 97, Died at Hastings, Mich. Hastings, Mich., - July 6. - The strenuous and romantic life of DANIEL D. BROWN ended here when he was buried in Thornapple Township, where he had lived for many years. MR. BROWN, who was 97 years old, was a "real son" of the American Revolution, and a veteran of the Mexican and civil wars. He was born in Bridgewater, Vt., on July 4. His father served under GENERAL ETHAN ALLEN and later under COLONEL STARK at the battle of Bennington. Later he became a spy in the patriot army. When DANIEL BROWN was 13 years old he ran away and became a towboy on the Erie canal. Three years later, just after the Black Hawk war, he provided himself with a rifle and made his way into the wilderness of Illinois and Iowa, where he hunted and trapped with the Indians. In the frontier town of Nauvoo, a Mormon strong- hold, he saw BRIGHAM YOUNG and his retinue of wives. In one of the frontier towns BROWN also became acquainted with BRIGHAM YOUNG himself. Desiring a glimpse of civilized life, BROWN left the wilderness at the age of 22 years and made his way back to his old home in Vermont. He found that his father had married again. DANIEL had eight brothers and ten sisters. In 1840 DANIEL persuaded his brother, NELSON, to come west, and they took up land in Barry county. After spending several years here they returned to Vermont, where DANIEL enlisted in Clarendon for service in the Mexican war. As a member of CAPTAIN SOBIESKI PARKER'S 23d Vermont militia, BROWN served in all of the battles fought by GENERAL SCOTT'S army between Vera Cruz and the capture of the Mexican capital. He re- ceived an honorable discharge after the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. ===============================================================================
