Daily News 16 July 1909 A Fatal Wreck Kalamazoo, Mich., July 16 - Two persons killed, three probably fatally injured, and several sus- taining serious bruises, is the result of a head- on collision on the Chicago, Kalamazoo & Saginaw railroad, a branch of the Michigan Central, which occurred between a passenger and a freight train at Turpening Crossing, on half mile south of Shultz, a few miles north of Kalamazoo, late yesterday after- noon. The fatally injured were brought to this city last night on the relief train that was sent out from the yards in this city, as soon as the acci- dent became known. DEAD: MELVINE MEAD, engineer, Kalamazoo SETH CHANDLER, fireman, Kalamazoo Probably fatally injured: FRED KRUSE, engineer, Kalamazoo, hip broken JOHN MILBECK, fireman, Kalamazoo, shoulder broken MRS. M. S. GOULD, passenger, Adrian, Mich., leg broken, injured internally. Injured: MRS. CHARLES BATCHELLOR, passenger, Hastings, Mich. MRS. HANNAH BATCHELLER, passenger, Hastings, Mich. E. A. BURTON, passenger, Hastings, Mich. MARTIN GOULD, passenger, Adrian, Mich. BENJAMIN VOORHEES, baggageman, Kalamazoon, Mich The blame for the accident is attached to BENJAMIN McMURRAY, agent and operator at Delton, who is alleged to have failed to deliver a meeting train order. The passenger train collided head-on with the freight train it was to have met at Schultze. The coroner's jury meets today at Hastings, Mich., to investigate the wreck, and the state railroad commissioner is on his way there to be present. ===============================================================================
