GREENMAN, residing in this county about twleve miles east of Elk Rapids, has been arrested on a charge of raped committed upon a little girl, said to be under ten years of age and a sister of his wife. He has been bound over to the June term of the Circuit Court for trial. It is said that GREENMAN has repeatedly committed this offence upon this girl; but has heretofore succeeded by threats in preventing her exposing him. As the little girl lived in his family, the brute evidently used the advantage thus possessed over her, to subserve his fiend- ish purposes. GREENMAN'S wife detected him, however, in his last attempt and after having kept it secret for a few days until the terrible fact could be no longer be kept to herself, she caused a complaint to be made and her husband to be apprehended. [TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: I can find no record of the trial or the verdict. I did find a JOHN GREENMAN, age 32, married, who died in the "Co. house" in Grand Traverse county of "self abuse" on Jan. 5, 1876, with birthplace "unknown". 1870 Census, Helena Twp., Antrim Co., MI, Page 16A GREENMAN, JOHN - age 26, farmer, b. Penn , ELLEN - age 22, b. Ohio , ARTHUR - age 4, b. Penn , WM - age 2, b. Mich His wife, ELLA, married IRA J. WHITE and they are found on the 1880 census of ED 109, Orange Twp., Kalkaska Co. MI. ELLA died in 1938 and her obituary (Kalkaskian, 3 Nov., 19380 mentions her marriage to JOHN GREENMAN in 1862. ===============================================================================
