Fire of undetermined origin Thursday morning destroyed the Alpena county infirmary and caused the death of one inmate, while another is missing. Twenty-eight other aged persons were taken from the building and given temporary shelter in a house at Oxbow farm. Charles Rudd, 70, was carried from the burning structure on a stretcher and died within a few minutes, either from exposure or fright. A. Delbert Outman, 69, is unaccounted for, despite a thorough search of the ruins. His body is believed to have been consumed in the flames that, uncontrolled for several hours, swept through the build- ing. Of the two story building only a portion of the rear wall remained standing after the fire. Snow drifted roads, a blinding snow storm and frozen hydrants combined to impede the work of the fire department. In the face of these obstacles, efforts of the firemen were concentrated on the rescue of the inmates. Loss of the building alone is est- imated at $50,000. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
