Long Rapids Ossineke ALPENA. ------ The seat of justice for Alpena county, is situated on Thunder Bay, at the mouth of Thunder Bay River. If is an important lumbering point and enjoys a trade with all the lower lake ports. At least $100,000 is invested in the Alpena fisheries. An excellent mineral spring exists here and is much resorted 10 by invalids. Regular lines of steamboats connect Alpena with Detroit and Bay City. Distances, to Detroit 230 miles, to Standish, on the Jackson, Lansing and Saginaw Railroad, 100 miles. During the winter season, while navigation on the lake is sus- pended, shipments are made via Standish, Telegraph, Western Union; Express, Holt's. Population, 4,000. Wm. D. Hitchcock, postmaster. LONG RAPIDS ----------- A postoffice on Thunder Bay river, in Alpena county, 18 miles west of Alpena. OSSINEKE -------- Ossineke is a small village of about 100 in habitants, in Ossineke township, in the southeast part of Alpena county and 14 miles from Alpena. It is on the shore of lake Huron, and was settled in 1850. The country is mostly timbered, - pine, cedar and hemlock - though the back country contains good farm lands. Lumber and cedar posts are the principal shipments. In the vicinity are valuable deposits of white clay. It has a tri-weekly mail. J. E. Sanborn, postmaster.
