HOOFMASTER, of Monterey, was mortally wounded by the discharge of a gun which he was engaged in cleaning at about six o'clock Tuesday afternoon, May 17th. The gun had been loaded and had been returned loaded with ball and cartridge. Although warned by Dr. Stanton to be careful as the gun might be loaded, he put his foot on the trigger and half-cocked the piece. Shortly after, while drawing out the wiper, holding the muzzle of the gun toward him- self, the gun went off, the charge entering his bowels just above the navel. The wound is undoubtedly a fatal one. ===========================================================================
