It is bounded north by Ottawa and Kent, east by Barry, south by Kalamazoo and Van Burcn Co's., west by Lake Michigan, and contains 832 square miles; traversed by Kalamazoo River and its tributaries, and Black River. Its surface is varied, elevated towards the east; soils sandy, or sand mixed with clay, with rich alluvial valleys along the rivers; timber is abundant, and the county contains over 400 farms, and 50 manufactories, population 8,400; population in 1850, 5,125; County seat, Allegan. Dibble. - ALLEGAN - A post village in the township of the same name, and the county town of Allegan County, is beautifully situ- ated on Kalamazoo River.at the head of navigation. The village is flourishing, and has an active trade. There are two newspapers published here, the "Allegan Record," and "Journal," weekly issues; there is a plank road leading from Kalamazoo to Allegan, distance 28 miles; population of V. & T., 1,500. The vil- lage of Richmond is situated in the north west part of the town, on the north side of the Kalamazoo river. Population of town 300. William C. Meeker, postmaster - MARTIN - A post office in the town of the same name in Allegan county. The town is drained by a branch of the Kalamazoo and Rabbit rivers. Surface undulating; soil varied - in most parts fertile. It has extensive wooded plains. The village is 51 miles from Lansing. E. Phetteplace, Postmaster. - MONTEREY - A post office in the township so called in Allegan county. The town is intersected by Rabbit river and its branches. Surface diversified, soil rich and fertile, and well tim- bered with pine - 66 miles from Lansing. Population of town 700. Noah Briggs, Postmaster. - OTSEGO - A post village in the town of Otsego and Allegan county, and is pleasantly situated on the Kalamazoo river, at an elevation of 30 feet above the level of the river. The town is drained by the Kalamazoo river and a number of small streams. Surface hilly; soil varied and well timbered. Population of town 1,200.
