S. GILMAN, editor of the Aroostook Pioneer, died at Houlton at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning, aged 54 years. He was born in Readfield and served his apprenticeship in the office of the Maine Far- mer at Augusta. In December, 1857, he started the Pioneer at Presque Isle, the first paper printed in the county, in company with J. B. Hall. Soon after he became sole proprietor. In 1868 he moved the Pioneer to Houlton where by attention and ef- fort he accumulated a handsome property. In March last he formed a partnership with his son, GEORGE H., who has conducted the paper during the sick- ness of his father. Although he has met with losses, he leaves a nice property for his family. He was never in good health, nevertheless he was a dili- gent business man, and wonderfully energetic. His life was insured for $5000. He leaves a wife and four children. ===========================================================================
