                    EARLY RESIDENT
                      OF COUNTY DEAD
                      
                 CHAS. W. PAYTON DIED AT 
                   TERRE HAUTE AT AGE
                       OF 85 YEARS
                       
         Terre Haute, June 21 - CHARLES WILLIAM PAYTON,
       85 years old, died at the residence of his daughter,
       MRS. JAMES ROBERTS, 120 north Thirtieth street,
       Friday.  He was one of the pioneers of Indiana,
       having been born in Montgomery county, near Wave-
       land, on Sept. 8, 1838.  Besides the widow, ELIZA
       JANE PAYTON, he is survived by one son, WM. PAYTON,
       of Terre Haute; one daughter, MRS. ROBERTS; one
       sister and two brothers, LUCINDA STUMP and PIERCE
       PAYTON of New Market, Ind., and DAVID PAYTON, of
       Crawfordsville, Ind.; eight grandchildren and
       three great-grandchildren.
         MR. PAYTON moved to Terre Haute 36 years ago
       and was associated with Blair, Faily and Ragan
       in the old heading factory which was located where
       the Union depot now stands.  He later was employed
       by the city of Terre Haute, and it was he who 
       planted the trees which now beautify Ohio boule-
       vard.  MR. PAYTON was an active member of the
       First Baptist church until a few years ago, when
       his failing health compelled him to retire from
       his activities in the church.
         Had MR. PAYTON lived until February he would
       have celebrated his sixty-fifth wedding anniver-
       sary.  Funeral services were held Sunday after-
       noon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence, 120 north
       Thirtieth street.
