A Gang of Prisoners Make a Bold Attempt to Escape by Overpowering the Turnkey. At an early hour this morning Captain Miller, night turnkey at the Jail, went into the main body of the building, where the most dangerous prisoners are kept, to release from his cell a man who complained that he was very sick. He had no sooner opened the door than a gang of prisoners five or six in number jumped on him and began beating him in a most unmerciful manner. They finally took his gun away from him and threw him into the cell which he had just opened. They then marched up to the door leading to the office, and commanded a trust to pull back the lever by which the door is opened and shut and release them, but he re- fused. The trusty, realizing that something was wrong, at once telephoned to police head- quarters for a detachment of patrolmen, who soon came, and released the turnkey from his predicament, locking the refractory prisoners in their cells again. ==========================================================================
