Dec. 1922 [p. 252] DEKALB COUNTY County Jail, Auburn Visited June 22, 1922 The jail is located opposite the court house, in Auburn, T. L. Hoodelmier, sheriff. Building and Equipment: The jail is constructed of brick and is strong and safe. The ventilation comes from the windows and a venti- lating shaft into each cell. There are sixteen cells for men, two cells for women, two hospital cells and two cells for juveniles. The jail is lighted by electricity and heated by steam. City water is supplied. There is a closet in each cell, in good condition. The jail is clean. The plumbing and sewerage are in good condition. There is one bath tub, also five showers. They are all in good condition. Iron bunks are used, with standard bedding, which appeared clean. The bedding is washed weekly. Management: The jail is managed by the sheriff, who inspects it daily. The commissioners do not visit the jail at regular inter- vals, but drop in occasionally. The sheriff makes a written report, quarterly, to the board of county commissioners, but does not report to the court. Tramps are not received. City prisoners are received upon arrest. Inmates: Population: One man, awaiting trial. There is provision for the classification of prisoners. No occupation is provided. Prisoners bathe weekly. Three meals a day are served. Reading matter is furnished. Religious services are held once a month. Recent Improvements: Screens have been placed on the windows. ===========================================================================
