The freight train from the north was entering Wood- stock at a slow rate of speed; HENRY VANUTE, the head brakesman, ran along the top of the cars to nearly the head of the train, intending to uncouple some of the cars. In stepping from a box to a flat car, he lost his footing and fell beneath the cars, and was probably instantly killed. The whole train passed over him, and his remains were found in the cattle-guard near the mill. His legs and arms were terribly mangled; he was also injured in the head and side. An in- quest was held over the remains, and in accordance with the facts a verdict rendered. The deceased was one of the best men in the employ of the road. He leaves a wife and child, in humble circumstances, who reside at Janesville, Wis. In such weather as was experienced on Monday last, railroads are well served that can find men who will risk their lives and limbs upon the tops of the slippery cars. ===========================================================================
