Western Historical Company, Chicago - 1879 [p. 622] W. SCOTT BELDEN, publisher of the Jackson County Record, Maquoketa; is a native of Hornellsville, Steuben Co., N.Y., and was born Sept. 4, 1835; when 17 years of age, he went South, and taught school in Kentucky for four years; he then came to Jackson Co., and arrived in Maquoketa March 1, 1857, and engaged in the drug trade. He enlisted July 24, 1861, in Co. L, 2d I. V. C., and was commissioned First Lieutenant; he served in the Adjutant General's Department for two years, and was in every battle and skirmish of the department; he was commissioned Captain in August, 1863; after the war he returned here, and in the fall of 1865, was elected Sheriff of Jackson Co.; he was editor of the Excelsior for seven years; over one year ago, he established the Record. He married Miss EVELYN HUMPHREY, from Erie Co., N.Y., Oct. 31, 1874; they have one son - HOWARD H., born March 28, 1876. ===============================================================================
