- Calhoun County -

Calhoun County was created in 1838 and named for John C. Calhoun, member of the U. S. Senate from South Carolina and seventh vice president of the United States. Originally the county was located between the Apalachicola River and St. Joseph Bay. The county seat was at St. Joseph which was abandoned by 1844. The original boundary was expanded to the north with lands taken from Jackson and Washington counties. Part of Calhoun County was taken off in 1913 to form the new Bay County, and in 1925 the southern part was taken off to form the new Gulf County. Gulf County now includes all the territory that formed the original Calhoun County. The county seat, and largest city, is Blountstown.
