Colorado, nicknamed the Centennial State. is the eighth largest state by area and the 21st by population. It contains 104,185 square miles which is divided into sixty-four counties. Colorado is bordered on the north by Wyoming, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, and Oklahoma to the southeast. It shares the Four Corners region with Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. The capital, and largest city, is Denver

Outgoing President James Buchanan signed an act creating the Territory of Colorado on February 28, 1861. On August 1, 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 that admitted Colorado to the Union as the 38th state.

Denver is known as "the Mile High City." The 13th step of the capital building in Denver is exactly one mile above sea level. The Colorado State Capitol Building was constructed in the 1890's using roughly 280,000 cubic feet of Colorado white granite quarried from the Aberdeen Quarry near Gunnison. In 1908 gold leaf was added to the dome, donated by Colorado mining magnates, to commemorate the Colorado gold rush. The floors of the building are White Yule Marble from quarries near Marble, Co. Colorado Rose Onyx, also known as "Beulah Red," is used throughout the interior. It took six years (1894 - 1900) to cut, polish and install the marble. All of the Beulah Red marble known to exist in the world was used.

Other interesting facts: Leadville, in Lake county, at 10,430 feet, is the highest incorporated city in the U.S. Spanning two city blocks Glenwood Springs is the largest natural hot springs in the world. Grand Mesa, in western Colorado, is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world.
