CARTRIGHT -- born in Monongalia county, January 9, 1826, has lived in what is now Marion county since he was twenty years of age, and is one of the substantial farming residents of Mannington district. He married Nancy Kerns, who was born in Monongalia county, June 19, 1827. Their marriage was solemnized in Mannington district, March 22, 1847, and its eleven children are recorded: John J., born December 8, 1847, married Martha L. Cunningham, and lives in this district; Clarissa E., born March 27, 1848, married Eli Kendall, and resides in St. John, Stafford county, Kansas; Joseph E., born October 25, 1851, married Helen Satterfield, and lives in this district; Maria Frances, born October 1, 1853, married William S. Snodgrass, and lives in Mannington district; Rebecca, born October 6, 1855, died February 20, 1865; James B., born June 19, 1858, is deceased; J. C., born February 1, 1860, is in Kansas; Thomas M., born December 19, 1862, lives at home; Peter, born October 12, 1863, died January 18, 1866; Melissa J., born August 24, 1866, lives at home; Louisa M., born June 23, 1867, died October 12, 1876 Jacob Cartright, now deceased, the father of Thornton F., was a native of Delaware, and was a nephew of the celebrated circuit-rider, Peter Cartright. The mother of Thornton F. was Rebecca, daughter of Isaac Davis. She is now living in Monongalia county, at the age of 73 years. Her father was a soldier of the Revolution, serving two years in the infantry, under Washington. John J. and Rebecca (South) Kerns, the parents of Mrs. Cartright, came from Greene county, Pennsylvania. Her father is deceased, her mother living at the age of 89. Thornton F. Cartright was drafted for service in the last year of the civil war, but reported at Washington the day after Lincoln's assassination, and was discharged. John J., the oldest son was seven months in the service. Thornton F.
