Was Captain on Great Lakes For Many Years. CAPT. EDMUND G. BEBEAU, 80, a lake captain for many years, died Sunday morning at Door county Memorial hospital following a three years illness. He was born Oct. 12, 1873 in Two Rivers and moved to Sturgeon Bay in 1893. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. MOSE BEBEAU. He received his captain's papers when he was 21 years old, making him one of the youngest captains on the Great Lakes at that time. He worked for the Leathem Smith Co. in Sturgeon Bay for four years and then was first officer for four years on a passenger ship operated by the Hart Steamship Co., Green Bay. Following that he was associated for six years with the Sturgeon Bay fishing firm of KALMBACH and BEBEAU. For some time he was captain of the tug Sylvia, one of the first icebreaker in these waters. For 12 years he was a tug captain for Greiling Bros., Green Bay, and for four years he was with the Great Lakes Towing Co., Milwaukee. For the last 30 years he was with the Dunbar and Sullivan Dredging Co., Detroit. He also operated a cherry orchard for 44 years. He was a charter member of the local Tugmen's Protective Association and also belonged to the Door county Marine Men's Association. For 52 years he was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He belonged to the Holy Name Society of Corpus Christi Catholic church, W. Sturgeon Bay. He was married at Sturgeon Bay in 1895 to the former MARIE ZACKEY. Survivors include the wife; five daughters, MRS. ALBERT (SYLVIA) SCHLINGEN, Sturgeon Bay, MRS. J. P. (LEAH) BLANCO, San Juan, Puerto Rico, MRS. ROBERT (NATALIE) SCOTT, Toronto, Canada, MRS. GEORGE (DELORES) FISHWICK, Chicago, Ill., and MRS. EDWIN (MARY) WICHMANN, Milwaukee; one son, GERARD, Sturgeon Bay; 15 grandchildren; one brother, MAYO, Sturgeon Bay; and one sister, MRS. ALBERT (BELLA) LEYSE, Kewaunee. The body will lie in state at the Stoneman funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 8:30 from Stoneman's and at 9 o'clock from the Corpus Christi Catholic church with the Rev. HERMAN SCHMITZ officiating.
