Funeral services for CAPT. JOHN IVERS, former resident of Port Huron and well known lake captain, will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. from Blessed Sacrament church, Detroit, with burial in Mt. Hope cemetery here. CAPTAIN IVERS died Saturday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. EVELYN O'MARA, in Detroit at the age of 82. He had resided in Detroit for more than 30 years. One of the oldest Great Lakes navigators, CAPTAIN IVERS began his career in the days of sailing vessels. With the exception of a term of service in the Civil war, CAPTAIN IVERS passed his entire life from young man- hood to old age upon the lakes, serving as master of several modern steel cargo carriers. He retired ten years ago. He was a member of William Sanborn post, G.A.R., of this city and a charter member of the Shipmaster's association. The latter body was organized in 1886 as the outgrowth of an offer by CAPTAIN IVERS to assist the widow of a ship's officer. She had asked for a loan of $50 with which to bury her husband and CAPTAIN IVERS, upon seeing her destitute, explained the situation to a group of vessel masters gathered at a ship chandler's store. A collection was sponsored and CAPTAIN IVERS returned to the needy widow with $125. The result was the for- mation of the Shipmaster's association by the lake men, having the object to pay $100 to the widow of any of its members who might die. CAPTAIN IVERS leaves three daughters, Mrs. O'MARA, Mrs. J. E. QUINN and Mrs. RUSSELL H. LEGGE, and a son, JOHN G. IVERS. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
