The parents and younger brother of the young man were in attendance at the Murphy temperence meeting at the time of the shooting, so that with the exception of his little sister who was sleeping he was the sole occupant of the house. When Mr. and Mrs. DAKE returned home after the close of the meeting they were horror stricken on finding their son lying in an unconcious condi- tion upon the floor. He expired a few moments after his parents return. The unfortunate young man ad- dressed two letters to his parents, stating among other things that he had forged a check on the Manistee National Bank for $10, made payable to HARRY HOWARD, and signed by A. S. HAINES. This check he had passed at the store of JAMES WEBSTER, purchasing a pocket knife at the value of 75 cents, and receiving the remaining $9.25 in change. He re- quested that his father would redeem this check. He also stated that he had taken a large quantity of laudnum which he found in the house, and hoped to die a happy death - or words to that effect. The young man had contracted the habit of reading the flush literature of the day, a book entitled "The Forged Check" being found in his collection; and that book, it is thought, demoralized his mind and led to the awful consequences which followed, and cast such a dark shadow over that once light happy house hold. - Manistee Times. ===========================================================================
