The poorhouse and all other buildings on the county farm, through the good management of our efficient keeper, Mr. W. B. Horton, are kept in the best possible condition. Facilities for bathing are bath room on the first floor, with hot and cold water. Will also have bath room in the new addition now building. The rooms occupied by the inmates are warmed by furnaces those occupied by the keeper and his family are heated by stoves. Ventilation is fair, given partyly by double chim- neys and ventilating flue in center. The treatment of paupers is kind and humane in every respect. Food is of good quality, plenty of it, well cooked and served. Clothing is substantial and suited to the season. The sick are as well cared for as is possible in an insti- tution of this kind. We are building an addition to the county house, 36 x 56 feet, two stories and basement, the first floor of which will be specially fitted up for hospital and sick wards. No special ac- commodations for insane persons; we are very seldom called upon to place such unfortunates in the poorhouse, even temporarily. There is a good and well kept district school one-half mile from poorhouse, but we avoid as much as possible keeping any children within school age in the poorhouse. =========================================================================== Page 141 Biennial Report of the State Board of Corrections and Charities 1907-1908 MANISTEE Infirmary four miles from Manistee.
