MANISTEE, July 22. - Fire Wednesday night destroyed the mammoth Buckley & Douglas saw mill and salt works with an estimated loss of $1,000,000. Flames, which spread to every building on the 10-acre site of the plant, threatened several times to engulf a fourth of the city's residential district. Five hundred volunteers joined with the fire department in battling the flames. At no time was there any hope of saving the industrial property and the fight was directed to saving home dwellings and it was not until midnight that danger had passed. A score or more of small fires, started by flying embers, were put out in various parts of the city. Origin of the conflagration has not been determined. A first it appeared that only the sawmill would be involved, but later the salt block, a comparatively new structure, burst into flames. Low water pressure prevented firemen from effectively coping with the flames, which spread fast. It is the greatest fire that the city has suffered since 1873 when the entire town was destroyed. The only protection carried was plant insurance, a fund which had been added to annually from dividends of the com- pany. As the mill was establilshed 35 years ago, it is reasonable to suppose that more than half the loss sustained will be equalled by the insurance reserve. ==========================================================================
