NOYES, in tow of the steamer JOHN E. HALL, were bound Charlotte to Deseronto loaded with coal when storm set in. Newspaper reports say the HALL had mechanical trouble and cut the tow line to avoid an imminent collision. After two days of being thrashed and bashed by the storm her distress signal was seen and the crew of the Charlotte life-saving station went to her rescue. Upon reaching the NOYES they found her covered in ice with her cabin smashed in and leaking fast. She had lost her sails, yawl boat, and both anchors. The NOYES was driven ashore at Salmon Point and broken up, but all of her crew were saved. The Buffalo Courier on December 24, 1902, said: "The story of the rescue is one of the most heroic in the annals of the lakes." For their heroic efforts Capt. Gray and Surfmen Chapman, Downing, Eastwood, Eggleston, Henderson, Palmer, Rose and Seymour of the life-saving station at Charlotte, N.Y., were awarded the USLSS Gold Medals. ======================================================================== Sources: Obituary Capt.
