J. Laurie, Milwaukee, WI., & Capt. E. J. Anderson Chartered by George Mielke, Benton Harbor, MI MASTER: Capt. Erwin J. Anderson, Washington Island, WI TONNAGE: 63 gt DIMENSIONS: 60.7 x 20 x 7 CASUALTIES: 6 SURVIVORS: 0 Had left the Robinson dock at St. Joseph shortly after 6 a.m. on Friday, September 26, with 10,000 baskets of grapes destined for Milwaukee. A couple of hours later a southwest gale bore down on Lake Michigan. Coast Guard crews set out from both sides of the lake to search for the NORTH SHORE when she was reported overdue at Milwaukee. Joining the search were aircraft of the Kohler Aviation company. Hope for her survival was given up when baskets of grapes began coming ashore between Holland and South Haven. This same storm took down the barge SALVOR and the schooner OUR SON. The NORTH SHORE attracted wide attention because her plates had been electrically welded instead of riveted. Capt. Erwin Anderson Mrs. Harriet Anderson, age 18 (bride of captain) Joseph Tekus, of Cudahy, WI Royal Richter, age 16, Washington Island Arthur C. Peters, age 20, Milwaukee, WI John Johnson, Two Rivers, WI The captain and his wife, Harriet (Smith), had been married just the month before in Port Washington. His father was Judge John A. Anderson of Washington Island. Note: some sources confuse this with the NORTH SHORE (#3626) formerly the Bon Ami, renamed in 1922. Newspaper reports of this loss, where any measurements are given, state that the NORTH SHORE of this report was 60 ft in length and had a steel hull. The NORTH SHORE (#3626) was 108 ft. in length with a wooden hull. ======================================================================== Sources: Milwaukee Sentinel- 1, 21 October 1930 Ludington Sunday Morning News, 28 September 1930 Ludington Daily News, 29 September, 1930 The News-Palladium (Benton Harbor, MI) - 27 September 1930 Chicago Daily Tribune - 28 September 1930 Merchant Vessel List (losses) - 1931
